What Is A Dry Bag?
A dry bag is a cylindrical bag with a roll top closure. Most importantly, it's made of a waterproof material that keeps everything inside it dry. Hence the very original name: dry bag. They are made from fabrics of varying thicknesses and water resistance. Some feel like a lightweight waterproof jacket, others feel closer to plastic.
The roll top usually has an extra stiff bit to keep the water out and there is always a buckle at either side of the lid, to clip together after you've rolled. We'll get onto exactly how you do that soon, but for now that's the overall picture of what a dry bag is: a watertight bag. Some come with added rucksack straps for carrying or a leash if you are taking it paddling. Most have a low profile handle on the bottom too, to help you pull your belongings back out again.
How To Use A Dry Bag
1. Pick a dry bag that will accommodate the items you wish to keep dry . Remember, you won’t be able to fill it right to the very top – it’s best to leave between a third and a quarter of the bag empty so you can roll it shut properly
.
2. Remove the excess air and pinch the top blades together.Using the strip or strips of re-enforced material found at the top of most dry bags as a guide, roll the top of the bag over once.
3. Start rolling down the top, applying pressure inside the bag.Once you’ve burped the bag through the single rollover, proceed to roll the top over again at least another two times (for a total of three rolls), to achieve a properly waterproof seal.
4. The last thing to do is clip the buckles together.Bend the top around, so that the plastic D ring (another common feature on dry bags) is on the outside, and clip the ends together.
Looking After Dry Bags
Keep in mind that lightweight dry bags are not designed for rough treatment and abuse. They need to be inside a backpack for protection when on the move, and anything hard-edged or pointed – such as your multitool – needs to be wrapped to avoid punctures in the fabric.
